Workstation with multiple users and few roaming profile

Hello,

I don’t find any document about how to set up a Lotus Notes Client with multiple users in my case.

There is one workstation, Lotus Notes Client 6.5.2 is installed.

Purpose :

  • multiple users connection and replication

  • use of networking directories to store user’s files (names.nsf, bookmark.nsf, notes.ini, journal.nsf, desktop.nsf)

  • some users are in roaming (BlackBerry smartphones)

Is someone have informations about the way i want to work with this workstation ?

Thank you in advance.

Look into Switch IDs

  1. obtain a copy of everyones lotus.id file. everyone using this desktop will have to have their own lotus.id file on it.

  2. install lotus notes for the main user

  3. select file/mobile/locations

  4. select (don’t open) office location

  5. ctrl + c to copy this location

  6. ctrl + v to paste this location

  7. open one of the office locations

  8. Click edit location

  9. on basics tab enter the next users name in the Location name field

  10. Enter users internet mail address in internet mail address field

  11. click mail tab / enter appropriate mail file

  12. click advanced tab / basics tab / browse for ID you want to switch to when using this location

  13. save and close

  14. modify the original location to use the ID of the main user. Each location needs an ID to switch to.

  • if one person is already logged into lotus notes you can easily switch users by clicking location option in lower right corner of notes to select an alternate user location. You will be required to enter that users password.

  • Or when opening notes us the For user drop down to select the appropriate user for sign on.

Hello,

thank you for your answer!

I already have tested this way with a specific location for each id. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with roaming id (BlackBerries users are in roaming, so their data are replicated in local and in a server when Notes is closed). A roaming id have overwrite the main client files in local.

Since you are using network drives for each user, I’d recommend setting up Notes as a single user install. It’s not pretty but for a one-off config it works. I wouldn’t want to have to support lots of users on this config unless it was planned system wide to start with.

NOTE: Windows has to have profiles (accounts) for each Notes user.

Login as one of the users (with the mapped drive) and configure Notes for that user making thier DATA directory thier network drive & path. Then you need to look at the NOTES.INI file and make it generic. References to USER.ID instead of individualized ID - jdoe.id, maryj.id etc. Also note that each user needs to map to the same drive letter.

Now you can login to the network & Windows as the other users and make sure that their network drives have thier ID file. You’ll essentially have to copy the first users DATA directory to each of the other users net drives - all except the ID file.

From there you should be able to login as each user and they will get a unique client experience - no shared bookmarks, journal.nsf, NAMES.nsf, etc.

As for Blackberries, I don’t know if the above config would work. It would seem that it should… worth a test.

Hello,

thanx for interest.

yes, I want to use mapped directories. Each user have it’s own mapped directory (named directories).

Note that I can use Windows to separate Notes profiles because the workstation is in a Novell Netware domain. So users have a Novell account that allow them to log on the PC.

“Then you need to look at the NOTES.INI file and make it generic. References to USER.ID instead of individualized ID - jdoe.id, maryj.id etc. Also note that each user needs to map to the same drive letter.”

How to proceed to make generic the notes.ini file ? I don’t understand how work your process.

Could you explain it a little bit ?

Otherwise, i maybe have an other way to work : create a desktop shortcup for each user. Each shortcut may have the mapped directories for user data in parameters. Does it work in my case ?

Thanx
