Windows roaming vs Notes roaming

Hello!

I am in a process of migrating our users to Windows roaming profiles and am also looking at how to include Notes in this process. Our environment is Windows XP SP2 workstations, Notes clients 6.5 and 7.0.x. Notes client is installed in multi-user mode.

It seems that the “official” way to support roaming users with Notes is to use Notes’ roaming, not Windows roaming. The user’s local Data directory is under Local Settings, which by default doesn’t roam with the Windows’ profile.

However, Notes roaming doesn’t seem to solve one problem which is very important in our environment. When user logs in to a workstation which she has never used before, she has to go through the initial Notes client setup. For our users, this is an insurmountable difficulty.

I could use a simple registry hack to make the Local Settings folder roam with the Windows profile, but then things such as Temporary Internet files etc would also roam, which puts extra load on the network, so this solution is also not ideal.

I also can’t put the user’s Data directory to a network drive since a lot of our users use laptops and need to be able to use Notes when disconnected from our office network.

How have others solved this dilemma?
