Why -r during Notes 6 Directory Upgrade view rebuild?

Can anyone tell me why the version 6 upgrade guide says to include the -r switch when rebuilding views during the Domino Directory upgrade? (nupdall names.nsf -t “($ServerAccess)” -r)

The way I have interpreted this is that it will keep or revert the database format to Release 5 (ODS 41?).
