I read that Lotus Notes is not an application but an "operating system extension". Does anyone know why this is or know any webpages that shed light on this distinction?
Subject: Lotus Domino not so far from an OS
If you speak of Notes/Domino. It is much more than an application. It is very hard to define but the term application is too much reducing.
But i have to say that this term refers to the idea that was an ideology ( and an utopy… ) of some person who were dreaming of lotus domino as an operating system…
Now i am convinced that it is not so far ! But Lotus/IBM did not walk the step for this market.
Call it as you want but keep saying Lotus Domino.
There would be lot to say but i can’t find any link dealing with the subject.
What i can say to help :
Domino integrates most of the communication protocol standards
It provides services ( as the operating system NT do), it provides policies ( as in W2000/XP), it uses a X500 basis directory ( as Active Directory now does with Ldap Standards. know your history), it can integrates ldap ( as Active Directory but it is much more flexible and standard high fidelity is probably better know the truth)…
I hope this will convince you : Domino has an HTTP services, it is also usable as an application server, it is also a mail server, a development, a ldap server… And many more …
See Lotus Notes, did you notice that most of the thing you do most of the time with your windows xp/2000 desktop, you can do it with a only a Notes Client V6.* installed. And then you can use Lotus Notes desktop instead of Wind 2000/XP desktop…
For instance see the explorer folder, or favorites link. It has limitation of course because it is just an “extension” of operating system…
Technically, know that Lotus Domino manages its proper threads and, as Doctor Watson did for Windows, there is a very usefull error catcher also in Domino 6. I can’t remember the name for this successor of Quincy…
