Why does it take longer to open an email with an attachment? Shouldnt it just show a representation of the icon? And not be loading anything?It even seems to take longer based on the attachment size.

maybe you can try compressing them… there are several products at www.mk-net-work.com that compresses existing atts and new atts.

It takes longer because the attachment is part of the mail (especially if you are opening on the server and many people are opening the same message).
For example, I worked on a Notes deployment where one office had to send a daily schedule to another office. They would not email it, so they faxed it. The receiving office would then convert it to a 25 MB PDF attachment and mail it to all 80 employees in the receiving office. These employees worked a fixed 8-5 schedule and their first required task was to read the schedule for that day. So 80 people, each opening a 25MB message at the same time was a disaster.
Guess who they tried to blame? The software, instead of their business processes.
But here was the workaround suggested by an enterprising employee in the receiving office until they could rework their business processes:
If you have an attachment in an email, you can use the preview pane to preview the message and you will not have the problem because the preview is really just a snapshot. You can then open the attachment from the preview pane.

I still don’t know why it doesn’t give me a snapshot when I “OPEN” the message. If I open an email with a huge attachment (to read the email)… it shouldn’t deal with the attachment until I launch or view it.

You are probably used to dealing with a system like Exchange, where the text of the message is stored separately from any attachments. That’s not the case in Notes – the entire content of the mail is stored in a single Note – the file is just content in a field, like the text is. When you open a document, you open a document, and that file is part of the document. (That’s what makes Notes mail portable and replicable, by the way – something other systems haven’t quite gotten around to duplicating yet.)

We experienced this even when just opening doc properties without opening the document. Disabling Symantec real-time protection for Notes solved this – turns out NAV on the client was detaching and scanning the attachments any time the doc was touched, however lightly. Disabling didn’t add much exposure since the filesystem real-time protection kicked in if the attachment was actually accessed.
