Why ACL Author required for Read access to Web app?

I am maintaining a web application which needs to be changed to read-only. That is, current users can edit and sometimes create documents, but the system is being converted to another, so we want to limit users to reading what has been done before.

However, if I change the ACL for those users from Author to Reader, then they cannot sign in. They keep getting re-prompted for their username and password.

Why could this be happening? What should I look for to change this?

Thanks for your help.

First, don’t repost the question.

Apparently, whatever URL you are sending them to is opening a form (or other element) which has events which modify or create data. Does the application create log entries in the database for monitoring? Does it open and edit other docs in the background? Check the form events and field events, esp. WebQueryOpen …

Doug, thanks for replying. The application is opening to a form, using ?OpenForm. Since that form is really for hosting an embedded view, it didnt occur to me that ?OpenForm actually required Author access, which I guess it does.

Thanks for your help.

I guess a followup question now is: How do I keep users from editing documents? How can I prevent some documents from being opened in edit mode? Thanks again.

Well, to show an embedded view on a form on the Web add a field SaveOptions with the value “0”. Make the form Available for Public Access Users (form properties) and give anonymous access write public documents and author access.

With Author access for user Anonymous, normaly documents would not open in Edit-mode while this user normaly is not author of any document.

I don’t think this will work for me. The users still have to be limited to their own documents – they just can’t edit them anymore. Am I right? Is there another way?

Thanks,

Try using ?ReadForm instead of ?OpenForm.
