You can easily find out the version being used by your Notes or Designer client.
Use File->Tools->Show Java Debug Console to open a Java console window.
Click once in the top section of the window (the large blank space with scrollbars), then press the V key.
Notes will show the Java version information, like:
Java Version Information
Version = 1.4.2
VM = Classic VM, v1.4.2 IBM Corporation
Runtime version = 1.4.2
VM info = J2RE 1.4.2 IBM Windows 32 build cn142ifx-20060209 (SR4-1) (JIT disabled)
If you get that information for a particular Notes client version, the same Domino server version should have the same Java version.

Scott,
Thanks for your answer, but I would like to know where IBM has the specification of the Java version implemented on a particular release of Lotus Notes.
For example, I am now using 6.5.1 and using your technique it says that:
Java Version Information
Version = 1.3.1
VM = Classic VM, v1.3.1 IBM Corporation
Runtime version = 1.3.1
Then I would need to know if 6.5.5 uses a newer version of Java, so I would request my desktop to be upgraded to 6.5.5 and which version of JAVA the Server is using (it might be LN7, but then I do not know what version of Java is running over there).
Would you have any idea where IBM has this information documented?
Thanks.

I have no idea if IBM/Lotus has documented this anywhere but, to the best of my knowledge, they’ve never changed the Java version for minor changes in the Notes version. I think all releases of 6.0 and 6.5 (including the 6.5.5, which is the latest minor release) have used IBM Java 1.3.1.
If you don’t know what version your Domino server is, you should be able to open the public address book (names.nsf on the server) then (in the left-side navigation frame) go to Configuration->Servers->All Server Documents and check what’s in the “Domino Release” column. If it’s the same as your Notes client version, the server should have the same Java version; If the server version is 7.0.x, it should have Java version 1.4.2 (but I don’t know a way to check this).
