Whats the magic of brackets around IP addresses?

Hello all,

one of my lasst tasks was to connect a domino domain to an smtp relay host, which provides 2 IP addresses due to fail over purposes. The following links helped to solve it:

IBM Open Mic Session “Best Practices, Configuring and Troubleshooting SMTP mail routing” - 9 June 2011 http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21502757

First relay server is not used to route mail when multiple IP addresses are listed http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21260130

Both documents list some examples how to enclose IP addresses with square bracketts…

… very interesting,

but where for hell is a documentation:

  • where can/must/may not use IP addresses in stead of hostnames within domino

  • possible separators and meaning of separators between IPs ( when the corresponding configuration field in the domdir is only single value )

  • function of brackets around IPs

Subject: Field level help provides examples of acceptable input

Field level help usually provides examples of proper input, whether it is a host name or IP address in brackets. I am inserting a screen shot from the Configuration document, Router/SMTP - Restrictions and Controls - SMTP Inbound Controls - click on “Exclude these connecting hosts from anti-relay checks”. The HELP Pop-up instructs to “enclose IP addresses in square brackets”.

Subject: Brackets on IP addresses

My recollection is that you use brackets for an IP address, no brackets for a host name.
