What is the limit of DB2 Limited use for Lotus Domino

IBM page on DB2 limited use entitlement on (Hybrid cloud software for a smarter business | IBM) has the following word written on it.

IBM® Lotus® Domino® 8 software supports the use of IBM DB2® software as an alternative data store to IBM Lotus Notes® Storage Facility (NSF) on a per-database basis on select Microsoft® Windows, Linux and IBM AIX® operating systems.

DB2 software integration capabilities enable developers to build new applications that blend collaborative services with Structured Query Language (SQL)-based relational data stored in DB2 databases. This integration also enables companies to consolidate their data within a common DB2 store and then integrate it with other applications.

End users of Lotus Domino or IBM Lotus Domino Express software on active Software Subscription and Support have a limited use license of IBM DB2 Enterprise software - solely for storage and management of Lotus Domino data. Inbound connections to IBM DB2 Enterprise software from Lotus Domino for administrative tasks, such as for backup via IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager for example, are permitted.

From the above sentences I suppose that means that we can use DB2 with limites use license if we access (read / write) the data inside from domino / notes, is my interpretation correct ?

Also does the DB2 offered with Limited use license have all of its capabilities (clustering, backup/restore etc) or is there any feature that is turned off ?

Basically you are only allowed to use DB2 (for free) for the Domino server to access. This does not mean that you can install DB2 point a Domino server at it, then use the DB2 server for Contentant manager, Commonstore etc etc.

The only connection you are allowed is the Domino server. ie the only other connection allowed would be an admin id for backing up that DB.

If you want to run other things in that DB2 environment then you will need to buy the DB2 licenses for what you want to use it for.

I hope this makes sense.

Nathan, thanks for explaining.

No, we are not using DB2 for content manager, commonstore, etc. What we are trying to do is develop a reservation application with Lotus Notes as its interface and an RDBMS to store it’s data since we assume that the nature of such data (small in size yet plentifull) would made it more efficient to be stored using RDBMS instead of Lotus Notes.

I assume with the above use it would be fine for us to use the Limited Use edition ?
