Hi, I am running a Domino server and client on a standalone PC. When I put a database on the server and try to get to it via the browser, I have no problem – that is, I can get to the application with no problem. So I think the server is configured correctly (it has all default settings).
However, if I raise the security level, the server requires me to authenticate, but never lets me log in. I am the only user in the Domino Directory, I am sure I’m using the correct user id and correct password. I am also set to Manager in the target database.
The target page is a very simple page with @UserName in a computed text field on it, so there is no funny linking or other login requests that I have to worry about.
Why can’t I log in? What else could be wrong?
Thanks very much.
-Jeff
P.S. Also, I’m not getting any error messages in log.nsf and I can access the database on the server via the Notes client.

have you enabled domino logging and reviewed domlog.nsf? The “regular” server log won’t give you all the info you need to troubleshoot. Also, check to see that your person doc in the address book on the server has an internet password - open the doc in edit mode and see if there is a string of characters enclosed in parentheses in the field if not then type in the password you wish to use and save the doc. You’ll have to do a dbcache flush and stop/start http to ensure the password change is recognized.

I enabled logging. I don’t see anything funny in there. Here’s what it shows:
Access log
69.125.156.111 jeff - [05/Feb/2007:14:23:06 -0500] “GET /training/AJAX.nsf/TestPage?OpenPage HTTP/1.1” 200 1311
69.125.156.111 jeff - [05/Feb/2007:14:23:17 -0500] “POST /names.nsf?Login HTTP/1.1” 200 1393 [I inserted the space between the h ttp to prevent posting problems.]
Nothing suspsicous there, I think.
More help is appreciated.

The person doc has an HTTP password. I’m sure I"m using the right password.
I’m going to read about domino logging now (feel free to point me somewhere or give tips about logging, too). Do I look up Domino Logging in the Admin help?

I was wondering what you mean with “raising the security level”. Normally when you want a user to authenticate for a web database, you just configure the ACL of the database not to have Anonymous and -Default- access.
Regarding internet passwords, Domino uses a somewhat understandable logic, for example you cannot have parts of the surname in password, not your own, or any other user’s surname. Domino seems to keep a list of well known surnames somewhere.

That was what I meant by “raising the security level”. The lower level allowed Anonymous access, by raising the security level I meant denying Anonymous access. But my userid still had Manager access.
The password is ‘secret’. I don’t think that is excluded (at least it’s worked on other Domino systems).

Have you tried to enter a password with 20 characters, including lower and capital letters and numbers and no known words, just enter pure garbage. When you change the password, it takes about 5-10 minutes before Domino recognizes the new password (haven’t found a way to fix this, in R5 it was only 30 seconds).

Make it at least 20 characters
And no, you don’t need a service contract with IBM. It helps in cases when your issue is clearly related to some internal bug in Notes/Domino, and there is no workaround to it. So far I have not had any cases where IBM would have needed to fix something, although it would have been useful. But else you get all answers much faster from this Forum.

OK. I made a 20 character, alphanumeric, mixed-case password (specifically: Abcd3fgh1jklmn0pqrst4vwx4z). I ran updall -r on N&A (load updall names.nsf -4). I get the same results.
Why can’t I log in. Everything seems normal and there are no error messages. I’m really PO’d.

No, if you didn’t have any other entries in the ACL than -Default- and Anonymous. When you set -Default- to NoAccess, try also to put the FullName of your Person doc in the ACL, if you still can log in, your Person doc and Server settings are just fine. Make sure the FullName field has Organization included, so a complete Person Doc would look like:First Name: John
Last Name: Doe
FullName: John Doe/ACME
Those 3 fields are VERY important, nothing else matters.

“Then I changed -Default- to No Access, I was still able to get to the form without authenticating.”
This should not happen, if you entered the correct URL I provided, including the &Login at the end of the URL. It should not even happen when -Default- is Manager, when you add the &Login to the URL it should always ask for your login.
Do you have session authentication enabled in your server document? It must be enabled.
Subject: RE: Web Server Login Failing (3rd req. because I’m really desperate)
I’m a little late to this party but it sounds like anonymous is still set to manager which would let him access the db without authentication.
Also from an earlier post… If this is just a person doc for web authentication and not a registered Notes user the organization should not be included in the full name. You should be able to use “John Doe” as the user name and not “John Doe/ACME”.
Subject: RE: Web Server Login Failing (3rd req. because I’m really desperate)
The person is a regular Notes user. There is only one user in the entire domain (me). It’s just a stand alone PC with Domino server (and clients) on it.
Anonymous was still set to Manager, but then I used the &Login on the URL and was not able to sign in. When I do NOT use &Login, the page shows up fine, displaying the result of @UserName, which is “Anonymous”.
I have to go to my brother’s now for a few hours, but please everyone keep posting if you can. I’m desperate (have I said that before?).
Subject: RE: Web Server Login Failing (3rd req. because I’m really desperate)
There is clearly something wrong with your Person Document, according to the symptoms since you used the &Login in the URL.
Read again what I wrote, make sure First name, Last name and Full Name are correct, and even put in the internet shortname First name and Last Name (no org).
Then login with First Name only, and enter the password. Domino will automatically pick the correct Person Document based on First Name, unless a Middle Initial is provided in the Person Document (then you have to enter First name + Middle Initial).
Subject: RE: Web Server Login Failing (3rd req. because I’m really desperate)
I’m still at my bro’s house. But when I get home, dare I delete and re-create the Person doc? It’s the only Person doc in the database and it is for the Manager of the database.
But it is a simple Person doc, with just about all defaults, so it should be easy to re-create, if necessary.
