VPN and slow Mail file open performance

Has anyone had problems with really slow performance when trying to open Notes mail files over a VPN connection. We have seen this with large and small mail files. When connected to the network directly the mail file opens without much delay.

The mail files are still ODS43 on a Notes 8.5 client. Nt all mail files/VPN are having this problem. The client is XP.

Interested in any ideas. The internet service that remote users have is broadband. I just finished doing a updall -r on a problem mail file . This did nothing to resolve the issue.

Are there any tunneling or port encryption issues that might vary among different users ?

Subject: Have you looked at the MTU setting?

Some VPNs, like AT&T, allow you to set it. (Show Login Properties, Preferences. It is at the end of the list).

If using a different solution, the MTU size can be set via the registry as well. A setting that is too high, can cause retransmits as well as not allow certain transactions to succeed.

Microsoft document’s MTU information in this document. (Change default MTU size settings for PPP or VPN connections - Windows Client | Microsoft Learn)

Subject: Resolved

The VPN client service changed and the new one and it’s connection SW sped things up.

Subject: Are you running port encryption in Notes?

If your VPN is already doing encryption, you might try disabling port encryption in Notes. Also, you mentioned large an small mail files. What about large vs. small inboxes. Any difference?

Subject: Bandwidth

How much bandwidth do you have on your internet circuit? Is it sufficient for multiple “live” Notes users.

Replicated mail was invented for this purpose, it works at full speed even with a 9600baud connection.
