Subject: Beware iSCSI if you have heavy IO loads; use fibre to your LUNs.
We run a lot of W2K3 servers on VMWare ESX and had major disk IO issues at peak usage times when their LUNs were connected using iSCSI . . . Our Domino mail server would grind, then crash as the work queues got too long.
We tried switching the iSCSI connects to dedicated network switches etc., but it was still just not up to the job. We changed to direct fibre connections between our ESX servers and filer heads (where the LUNs are) and it works a treat now: Over 900 concurrent sessions with no IO problems (it slows a little occasionally, but never bad enough to cause instability).
