Vmware and Lotus

Hi, I don’t speak english very well. I want to virtualize a Lotus Domino 8.0.2.Hardware:

San EMC Ax4-5i Iscsi 1 gb.

Vmware 3.5 update 3

PowerEdge 2950 2 quadcore 2,9 ghz / 32 gb Ram

70 users Notes.

what is the minimum of memory on windows 2003 standar virtualize? 4 gb?

the networking is a 1 gb with iscsi. somebody has had some problem (performance) with iscsi?

that is better the data in a Lun disk Vmfs or RDM LUN o Virtual Rdm disk?

Regards.

Thanks.

i run several servers on vmware dont have any problems there.

your memory question depends on your operating system. to use more then 3gb you need 64bit.

i run the data on on Lun VMFS.

Subject: Memory 4gb

Thanks for the answer.

I would like to use Windows 2003 standard 32 bits.

I have read that can handle 4 gb. It is thus?

Take advantage of the 4 gb?

Somebody uses san isci? that so the performance?

thanks

Subject: Beware iSCSI if you have heavy IO loads; use fibre to your LUNs.

We run a lot of W2K3 servers on VMWare ESX and had major disk IO issues at peak usage times when their LUNs were connected using iSCSI . . . Our Domino mail server would grind, then crash as the work queues got too long.

We tried switching the iSCSI connects to dedicated network switches etc., but it was still just not up to the job. We changed to direct fibre connections between our ESX servers and filer heads (where the LUNs are) and it works a treat now: Over 900 concurrent sessions with no IO problems (it slows a little occasionally, but never bad enough to cause instability).

Hth.

Subject: iSCSI

Hi james, good observation on the VM and ISCSI, I have seen the same thing here on one of my VM web servers running only Domino.

Mine backs up once a week when the Monday morning sales numbers hit.

Are the 900 connections you are seeing Notes client connections or Pages/sec or Avg. Disk Queue Length from Perf Mon?

Subject: Vmware iscsi

You are scaring to me…

I have a San Emc 4xi-5 (iscsi) and 50 users that are accessing directly and 20 users are accessing out office by replica Notes.

do you think that I will have those problems?

Subject: a single Program within Win32 bit can only use 2 Gbyte (3 Gbyte with a special switch).

with 70 users without any heavy apps you should be fine with 2 Gbyte.
