View names truncated in drop-down for dialog list field

Hello, all,

I can’t believe I couldn’t find any postings on this problem. I have a dialog list field with the “Use view dialog for choices” option. The db is “current database.” The problem is that the drop-down field to choose the view is so tiny it shows only the first dozen characters. It is impossible to distinguish between the views when you have a huge number of views with several layers so that there might be 100 with the same first dozen characters. For example (these are just made-up view names; mine are actually much longer, with more levels):

Applicant \ Western \ CA \ 2008

Applicant \ Western \ CA \ 2007

Applicant \ Western \ CA \ 2006

Applicant \ Western \ CA \ 2005

Applicant \ Western \ CA \ 2004

Applicant \ Western \ CA \ 2003

Applicant \ Western \ NV \ 2008

Applicant \ Western \ NV \ 2007

Applicant \ Western \ NV \ 2006

If you can only see “Applicant \ We” in the view drop-down, the only way to choose the correct view is to look at your list of views in Designer, count down to the right one, go back to field props, count down the same number, and test it to see if you got the right one.

Obviously there is a classification issue here, but there are countless ways to name views, and making every name unique in its first dozen characters just for this purpose is not my first consideration, nor is it practical with a huge database.

I would have less of a problem if that little drop-down field showed view aliases, but it only shows the whole name.

Am I being stupid??

Mark

Yep, that is why you might want to consider using an Outline element, or in the olden days the only option was a Navigator, sometimes only a Page, or Form will do the trick.

A ‘Frameset’ allows you to keep the view menu (which ever method you prefer) static while you change the view(s).

The frameset can borders (or not) and/or a nice background to match your views and forms… a very nice presentation options.
