Is it alright to run the Notes 6.0.1 client against a Domino 5.0.11 server?
I know some new features that rely on a R6 server may not work, but for basic functionality will it be okay to use?
Thanks,
Sean Donaghey

Subject: Using Notes R6 Client with Domino R5.0.11. Any Problems?
We have some users with 6.0 clients on 5.0.11 server even using inotes60.ntf template. It seams to work even with most R6 functions when working on a local replica. If you use an R5 template you will probably have lower risks of problems.

This is, of course, a very bad idea. Don’t use 6.0 templates on an R5 server.
Also, there is no difference in iNotes on R5 and 6.0 servers. A future 6.x version will update iNotes. Adding the 6.0 mail template to an R5 server doesn’t give you anything new in iNotes.
Subject: Why?
Why is a 6.0 template on a R5 server a very bad idea? It is a fully supported configuration. Are you referring to iNotes only? 6.0 Notes clients should be OK. There is some lack of functionality, but it seems to work.See Technote 7002724 for supported configurations and caveats.
Have you had any specific problems we should be aware of when using a 6.0 client on an R5 server with a 6.0 template?
Thanks

“It is a fully supported configuration”?
As mentioned, in Technote 7002724, there are many reasons not to use a 6.0 mail template on an R5.x server.
As far as iNotes, I’m just pointing out that there’s nothing new in iNotes. Adding the iNotes 6.0 mail template to your R5.x server doesn’t give you anything at all.
I guess I’m just tied of reading about problems in this forum, only to find out that the person is using an 6.0 template on an R5 server. To me that isn’t really the problem; they need to upgrade the servers first.
Subject: RE: Why?
“Fully supported” doesn’t necessarily mean “fully functional”. It just means that it’s been tested and works to a minimum standard of functionality, and that you will get support for any issues that you encounter. In this particular case, the first thing that support will usually do is to tell you to upgrade the servers.

I have problem with Archive. It doesn’t work if I go to Action->Archive->Archive Now. However, I can archive successfully by drag and drop.

I am using Client 6.01 with Server 5.05 and have had no issues.

I have had no problems running 6.x client with 5.x servers. And remember you can always run both 5.x client and 6.x client at the same time on your client pc. Just install in different directories and open the 5.x client first. If you want to test things flip back and forth between the too.
