We have a situation where we have many users who work in a shift environment. Typically they move between different PC’s from Shift to shift. They are presently using iNotes to access their mail. Talking about 50 or so people here who tend to be technically challenged.
We want these people to use the notes client. Problem is:-

They would need to carry around their ID file wherever they go;

They need to configure their mnotes client every time they sit in front of a PC they haven’t used before.
Is there any way of setting up a notes client to authenticate directly with the server and carry over a users settings wherever they go. Roaming doesn’t quite do the trick.

All roaming seems to do is take a person’s bookmarks and local names.nsf file with them.
What I want to be able to do is have a person be able to sit down in front of their PC, start up Lotus Notes and log in without the need to configure anything at all if they are using a computer they have never used before and without the need to carry their notes ID around with them. Roaming does not do away with the need for either.

No, it brings their id file and personal journal with them as well.
Just as a technical point – you cannot authenticate directly with the Domino server via the Notes client. Notes doesn’t do “user authentication” for client-to-server communication; the authentication is entirely between the user and the id file. Once that is done, the id file decrypts the user keys (held in the id file), which are in turn used as credentials for server communication. The server never sees the password (except as a hash if checking is enabled).
If for some reason you can’t get roaming to work, you can do it the old-fashioned way – have users log into the network and use their network drive space to hold their Data directory (which will also house their id).
