It’s known as a dataType suffix and indicates that the variable is a string.

The two declarations below mean the same thing

dim fred as string

dim fred$

I would like to add that data type suffixing in LS is a carry-over from Basic. It also provides a handy reference when you are reviewing code to see what data-type the variable is.
