We are planning to upgrade first one of our member mail server in AU although the primary main server (running on 7.0.3)is in JP. How can we upgrade AU server to 8.5.1 with out touching or upgrading our Domino Directory in JP. Because we want to maximize the use of Inotes in AU. And what are the consiquences if we upgrade the member server first instead of the primary server that holds the domino directory of the domain. AU and JP are using one domain.

Best practices says no, you should upgrade the admin server first but there should be no problem replicating if you disable the design replication of the names. (I recommend a little lab first so you can be sure)
Keep in mind that the admin server could still have a names 8.5 but they wont be able to use any new features until they move the binaries to 8.5.

Thanks for the response. What other things should I consider beside names.nsf (Domino Directory) if I want to push the upgrade of the member server. And how can I disable replicating the design on the primary server ?
