Preparing to roll out a brand new client platform for all our users, we are currently considering taking a step forward and creating a Notes 7.0.2 client package instead of creating a 6.5.x package now and then a 7.0.2 package later on, when we are ready to upgrade servers.
Notes and Domino being backward compatible and all, dare one suggest, that a 7.0.2 client on 6.5.x servers would cause no problems at all?
Subject: RE: Upgrading Clients to 7.0.2 but servers stay at 6.5.x - problem?
We are on the process of upgrading our Environment to 7.0.2.
Currently my Domino is 6.5.x and we have some clients (notes) who are running 7.0.2. And they are working perfectly. Infact I have Lotus Notes (with admin and designer) 7.0.2 installed on my machine, and everything is working fine (LN customized Apps, mail & web access, dom doc & workflow apps are perfect). And besides there should be no problem at all, bec. LN has a backward compatibility.
Just a thought, why don’t you upgrade first the Domino and use the LN Smart Upgrade Kit to rollout the upgrades for your clients?

Thanks for your comments.
Upgrading Domino first would be nice, but that project hasn’t been approved yet.
The project designing the new desktop image has been approved though, and I’m just trying to figure out, if there are problems involved in moving the client to 7.0.2, so that we later can do the Domino upgrade without bothering the users one more time.
Our current client installation sadly doesn’t support the Smart Upgrade feature.
Yes we have a support agreement with IBM using the toll free…
I’d like to share wu our experience with the toll free support… They are just Excellent and more than Perfect!
we did upgrades from 6.5.1 upto 6.5.4 FP3 and had some issues during the upgrades, & the IBM support guys is there to help solve the issues, they responded in few minutes. This is one of the investment my company had & it is very very useful for us admins here in the company… since we are a newbie in Domino administration.
Whatever issues we are having in our Domino, we can resolve it easily by the toll free support, and also mentioning the Forums/Technotes, etc.
They assisted and helped us perfectly on our planning for implementing on our upgrade to 7.0.2, though it is on schedule but everything still on the timetable, so far we are still confident that whatever unforseen issues that will happen, we will resovle it.
FYI: We do also find the forums and technotes excellent. I have never seen a forum that are so active and informative as this site… All handsup to the guys who started this.
so much for the ado… well, going back to the issue… from our 6.5.x we are going to use the full version of 7.0.2. With our test environment, everything is going smooth.
if there’s something you wanna know or it there’s something we can be of help to you, you can email me to: dsantua at almansoori dot biz / please put the SUBJECT: FORUM so it won’t have any problem on our spam rules.
