Upgrading 4.5.2 -> 6 or not

We are currently using a 4.5.2a system (Yes I know - an antique). We are thinking about upgrading to 6.0. I have seen some other posts stating that we need to go to 4.6.7 1st and that that is available for download. My first question is where can I find that download?

My second question is is there any documentation pertaining to this type of upgrade (4.5.2 → 6)

My third question is it possible to just upgrade databases and start with a clean install of 6.0 (eg. new userids, mail files etc.)? We do not have alot of database applications and theoretically we might be able to recreate them in 6.0 in which case is the scripting in 6.0 similar to that of 4.5.2.

I am going to leave at that for now and see what responses I get. Thanx in advance

Hi Sue,

you might consider the following steps:

a) Setup a new R6 server on a new box (I presume it’s an old hardware for the 4.5 too ). Use the the same cert.id as for your domain but create a new domain.

b) Replicate all databases over to the new server (this creates them as R6 dbs)

c) Cut & Paste the person documents and edit them to add new information

d) replicate the personal stuff up to the R6 server (Personal NAB, Journal etc.) You could use the Roaming profile structure already.

e) Down the old R4, rename the domain on the new box, rename the IP addresses on the new

f) Up the new and you should be all set

g) for the clients: a clean install makes sense (copy the personal files before) – a limited notes.ini with server and Id set already helps (we used NSIS scripts to prepare them before we uninstalled old Notes)

Good luck!

Subject: why create a new domain

What is the reason for creating a new domain?

I have never created a new domain because of an upgrade.

I would just take a copy of the notes.ini and store it in a safe place, then uninstall 4.5.2a, then put the notes.ini back (it is usally destroyed by uninstall), and finally install 6.0 in the same directory. That way the 6.0 setup goes smooth and you are not asked any configuration questions, as everything is already said in the notes.ini.The design of the user mail databases can be replaced by the R6 mail template. All other applications should work as they did in 4.5.2a.

Is the server ID hierarchical or flat certificate? IT must be hierarchical.

Do you recieve/send SMTP emails? That is a bit different, but the out of hte box set up for R6 should do it.

You can keep all of your mail files, just compact -c -D and then replace their design via convert.

There is a redbook on how to upgrade to R6 - you have to dig a bit for it, but you can find it on the IBM website.

The redbook for upgrading to ND6 is here:

I would have to check again but I confident that there is no outlined path for upgrading from 4.5 to ND6.

When putting back the notes.ini file remember R4 stored the file in C:\Windows but R6 stores it in the Domino folder. I would think if R4 has been uninstalled you probably need to copy the file to the Domino folder for the R6 install to find and use it.
