Upgrade server - keep clients...anyone done it?

Has anyone decided to keep their clients and only upgrade the servers?

My client runs Notes/Domino 6.5x and I would like to upgrade the servers to 8 in order to take advantage of the better performance. However, I don’t really anticipate building any new Notes applications so I don’t see any benefit to upgrading the clients.

Has anyone tried this, or at least have some experience with the long-term running of 6.5 clients with Domino 8? I’m thinking that the only real concern is mail. Will the v8 router play nice with the 6.5 mail dbs?

Thanks for any insights.

You can upgrade the server, just make sure not to update the user mail files or the ODS version.

Question, why aren’t upgrading the client?

"You can upgrade the server, just make sure not to update the user mail files or the ODS version. "

I can understand the mail files, but what’s wrong with updating the ODS?

“Question, why aren’t upgrading the client?”

Like I said, I don’t anticipate building anymore Notes databases. Any new systems will likely use other technology. So there’s really no reason to spend money upgrading the clients to get features they’re not going to use.

Sound cool…

Are you upgrading to exchange?

Subject: re: Cool,

No, haven’t decided on any particular technology yet. I’m just done with the Notes database structure. I need to go relational. And if I’m going relational, there’s no point in keeping Notes just as a front end. There are better systems for that.

You could simply upgrade the current Mailfiles and access via browser. - Just a thought. Archives might be something to considder.
