Upgrade Method

Hi All,

Our outsourced suppliers are planning to start upgrading our Domino Servers from 5.11 to 6.5.3

Their plan is to upgrade the Admin server first, the method is to rename the data directory, apply the upgrade then delete the new R6 data directory and put the complete R5 data directory back.

They claim this will give us the R6 “engine” so we can see if it works and regard it as being cautious.

In my opinion this will not prove any thing even if it works (and I have my doubts)

Do you guys have any comments on this

We have recently done this in an environment with 2 main clustered servers and about 50 other spoked servers. The method we used was: Break the cluster

Install R6 straight on top

Install R6 on the rest of the servers

Install the clients

One thing to look out for is the names.nsf only upgrade this design when all servers have been done

The names.nsf design is not much to worry about. I have seen the R6 design used on R4 to R6 servers in 2 companies. No functional issues, except with custom code and document access using roles issues.

Obviously watch out for extra coding that you have added.

As for general upgrades, I can’t see the point in replacing the R6 NTF files. The NSF databases will be upgraded to the new ODS which can cause problems in itself. If you are worried about designs being changed, turn off the design task.

Yes, it is probably best to start with non-user servers then move onto servers where people will shout.

Customised databases should be tested on R6 servers to check that they don’t fall over. If you don’t have the resources, still try the basic functions on an R6 server.
