Upgrade from R5 to R7

Hi all,

We have five locations running Lotus Domino R5 servers. We have a thick client application (abc.nsf) on R5 server and the replica of this database is created on the servers at other locations. This application is accessed by more than 2000 users and all of them use Notes client R5. And now we are planning to upgrade the server to R7. So how should we go ahead with this?

It is not possible for us to upgrade all the clients to R7 in one shot and the application is very critical for the organization.

Question: If I upgrade the database ODS to R7, will the users with R5 client be able to access the application.

Subject: Upgrade from R5 to R7

  1. Read the R5-to-R6 and R6-to-R7 redbooks available from the redbooks site.

  2. Upgrade the servers first, starting with your admin server. R5 clients can run happily against R7 servers, as long as you don’t convert the users’ mail files to the R7 design.

  3. If you update the ODS of the server replicas, R5 clients will be able to access this without any difficulties. What you CAN’T do is take an ODS 43 (R6 & R7) database and access it locally from an R5 client / server. I think there is a knowledge base article about FAQs on the ODS.
