Subject: Swing server method works best for new hardware
If you are upgrading hardware too then implementing the upgrade via the swing server method works best. Build your new server’s OS and install Domino, copy the data directory over and any applications, mail files, etc. to the new server along with the notes.ini and id file for the server. Configure the new server’s TCP/IP with a new IP address but the same host name. Shut down the old server, bring the new one on-line and if it is good to go you’re done. If there’s an issue then shut it down and bring the old server up until you can figure out what’s wrong with the new server.
Cheers

If your current Hardware meets the requirements of Domino 8.x, then the decision of whether to upgrade the Hardware before/after upgrading to Notes/Domino 8.x is up to-you.
