Upgrade from Lotus 6.5 to Lotus 9 ? (1000 users, 2 Servers)

A customer has an infrastructure of 1000 Lotus Notes users in version R6.5.x, and 2 servers in R6.5 (1 Application Server, 1 Mail Server). No web application, only application for Lotus notes Access.

I have experience in upgrades from 6.5 to 8.5, is one step, for other customers, without any problems. First the servers are updated, then the customers.

my question is, I can migrate directly from 6.5 to Lotus lotus 9? This type of upgrades is supported by IBM?

I would appreciate any feedback you can give me,

thank you very much

Subject: Upgrade to Domino 9

If you are running a release of Notes/Domino prior to 8.0, you should upgrade to at least Notes/Domino 8.0 before installing and upgrading to Notes/Domino 9.0. Upgrading from prior versions may work but is not tested or officially supported.

See following IBM Technotes :

Upgrade Central: Planning your upgrade to IBM Notes and Domino 9.0.x

Subject: My 2 cents

There is no major difference when upgrading from 6.5 to 9, comparing to 6.5 to 8.5. Just keep in mind that 9 has different requirements for OS, etc.
I suggest you to check http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21623106 http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21623106 (Planning your upgrade to IBM Notes and Domino 9.0.x). This technote contains links to various information one would need for performing the upgrade.

Hopefully it’s what are you looking for and good luck on your task

Subject: anyone have experience migrating from 6.5 to 9 in one step??

I know that upgrading from R6.5.x to R9.0.1 (in one step) is not supported by IBM.

IBM says:

“If you are running a release of Notes/Domino prior to 8.0, you should upgrade to at least Notes/Domino 8.0 before installing and upgrading to Notes/Domino 9.0. Upgrading from prior versions may work but is not tested or officially supported.”

The steps would be:

  1. update Domino Servers (1 Domino for Mail, 1 Domino for Apps with no web applications - only notes with @formula + LotusScript)

  2. leave Lotus Clients in version 6.5 (about 1000 users), but update these in the next 4 months (I hope)

  3. after migration, do not modify Notes applications using Domino Designer 9, only use Domino Designer 6.5 until ALL clients has migrated to Notes 9.

Thanks for the comments that can give me

Subject: Some suggestions

I understand it is not supported but should work. Even it was supported I would test the software package out. You can upgrade the servers in 2 steps (8.x and then 9.01) as you only have a few of those.

Some suggestions would be to upgrade mail file to 9.01 design as each user gets upgraded

Compact all local files to latest ods

Make sure all local files get the latest design (names.nsf, log.nsf , journal.nsf if you have one)

Once all users are upgraded look at the new features such as idvault

Subject: upgrade from Lotus 6.5 to Lotus 9 - completed!

Hello Barry,

I recently completed the migration of 4 server (in cluster environment) from version 6.5.4 (32bit on windows 2003) to version 9.0.1 on windows 2012 64 bit. The migration was transparent and users report better access speed applications

Previously, a testing laboratory was installed, and ALL lotus applications worked perfectly. (not web applications).

Thanks for your help, now I migration 1000 lotus notes clientes using MS System Center, and InstallShield Tunner for Lotus Notes. I have not finished assembling the package installation, but it seems something simple.

Again, thank you very much for your help, and I recommend everyone to do the upgrade.

regards

Subject: Great

When packaging the Notes 9.01 client I would suggest bundling the latest fp and imbedded Sametime client .

Also if you have a client already installed IBM has a great command line client called NICE http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21459714 http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21459714 that would remove all previous clients installed

You also would want to look at user policies and single sign on

Here is some info client installs
