The process is just like a new install except 1 you have to shut down the server first & 2 you do not run through a server config after the install.
On a properly sized Win2003 server the install should only take about 15 -20 minutes, including the directory updates.
Shut down the server, run the setup, select your install options and allow it to finish. When you restart the server after the install you will be prompted to update the directory. Hit “Y” to update the directory and your off and running. The server will full load when this process is finished.

It’s a good idea to test this process first, before you hit a production server with it.

Dear Robert,
Thanks. You have been a great help.
As this was my first time I was not confident till I read your comments.

If you have only one server and don’t need to worry about replication then… provided that you have a decent backup (and are happy with your DRP) you can just go ahead with it.
The whole process took 10 minutes for me… though the actual install took about 2 minutes.
Domino is very easy to backup and restore - just stop the domino service and use one of those portable USB HDDs to back it up \program files\domino\ and below (Faster and easier than tape). Do your install, and then run through your tests. (ie: HTTP / HTTPS , send mail from Hotmail/Gmail, Test AV Engine, Spam Engine, Logon, Check SSL Certificates, Test any critical applications etc…
If all of this tests ok, then the only thing you need to be cautious of are any scheduled agents.
I had no problems at all - I haven’t had an issue in Domino since R4.5-5.0 migration.
BTW: If you DO have multiple-Servers and Replication happening between them, you’ll need to co-ordinate any design replaces.
Good luck.

Thanks Gavin,
I have only one server. I now have the confidence to go for it.
Thanks again to the members for helping the newbie in town.
