I tested my first upgrade by mail client upgrade. I was successfully able to do the software installation. When I got back into notes, reopened the email notification and hit the “Upgrade Mail Template” button, I got the error “Cannot locate program”.
When I filled out the field in the upgrade notification form, I left the current mail template field to * and in the New Template I specified iNotes60.ntf (we use this template instead of the regular mail template).
I checked the local data directory through windows explorer and the mail60.ntf template is there.
Any ideas how to get this to work?

If the only thing you want to upgrade is the mailfile template - I would recommend using the “load convert mail\mailfilename * mailtemplate.ntf” command from the console.
I’m pretty sure this is failing because the upgrade notification is attempting to find the client upgrade software. You could try changing version number on the Client Versions tab, but then it might not do anything at all(?) Do you have anything entered in the “Root path for install kits” field?

I actually want to use the upgrade by mail to upgrade both the client software and the mail template. The client software piece works fine, it’s when the user goes back into the email to do step 2 (which is upgrade the template that I get the error).
The instructions for upgrade by mail say that the template must be on the local drive which is why you have to do the client upgrade first before the mail file. I check the local data directory on the machine and the file (inotes60.ntf) is there.
I have the “Root” field set to the path that holds the contents of the 6.01 CD.

I logged a support call with Lotus and it was discovered that two things were causing this process to not work properly

Template name is case sensistive. Since I was using iNotes60 instead of mail60.ntf, I had to list it exactly in the upgrade notification.

If your O or OU has any spaces in the name, it will not work.
