Upgrade By Email - Setup.ini format question

I am using the “Upgrade by Email” process and it works great, except I have one minor issue I’d like to resolve.

When I use “Upgrade By Email” to upgrade someone from R5 to R6.5.5 it always asks the user to install Notes Instant Messenger. We do not use Instant Messenger so I’d like to eliminate this prompt from the setup process.

Reading other posts I found that adding “IM_NO_SETUP = 1” to the setup.ini file will do the trick.

My question is, where do I put this statement in the ini file?

Like this, “CmdLine=/qb+ USENOTESFOREMAIL=0 IM_NO_SETUP=1”, with it on the same line as the “CmdLine. . .”?

I am not familar with how ini files should be formatted, so I am not sure if it matters or not that the “IM” statement be on the same line as the “CmdLine” statement.

Thanks,

Chad

Check out this technotes on the IM_NO_SETUP http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21210650

You will see how it is supposed to go into the notes.ini and there is a link at the bottom of the technote on how to add it to the install via a transform file. However, I suggest you read this article on Ed Brill’s blog about how to add Notes.ini values via Policy documents, its a much cleaner implementation. http://www.edbrill.com/ebrill/edbrill.nsf/dx/10022004052541PMEBRUB6.htm?opendocument&comments

Jeff, thanks for the info, but I do not need to use a policy or a transform file to get the upgrade done.

For me, using “Upgrade By Email” works just fine.

All I need to know is whether it matters or not that the “IM_NO_Setup” command needs to be on the same line in the SETUP.INI file as the “CmdLine=/qb+” command

I tried another upgrade of a user from R5 to R6.5.5 with the “IM_NO_Setup” and “CmdLine” commands on the same line and the upgrade process still prompted the user to install Instant Messenger.

It’s a minor issue, that is easily remedied by cancelling the IM install portion when it comes up and re-opening Notes. But it would be nice to have an INI setting that works to ignore this setup.

Guess I’m not being clear or something.

“IM_NO_Setup” is not a install parameter. It’s is a Notes.ini parameter. As explained at http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21210650

Jeff, thanks for the info, but I do not need to use a policy or a transform file to get the upgrade done.

You need some way of getting the IM_NO_SETUP=1 setting into the users Notes.ini file. Transforms and policy documents are two ways. There are others.

For me, using “Upgrade By Email” works just fine.

The information I’ve given you will make “Upgrade By Email” work in the way you want it to work.

All I need to know is whether it matters or not that the “IM_NO_Setup” command needs to be on the same line in the SETUP.INI file as the “CmdLine=/qb+” command

Not sure why you think the IM_NO_SETUP command needs to be in the setup.ini. Did you read the tech-note I linked? It’s titled “How to disable Notes Instant Messaging during the install or upgrade of the Notes Client”. Seems pretty relevant.

I tried another upgrade of a user from R5 to R6.5.5 with the “IM_NO_Setup” and “CmdLine” commands on the same line and the upgrade process still prompted the user to install Instant Messenger.

Yes, because again IM_NO_SETUP is a Notes.ini parameter not an install parameter.

It’s a minor issue, that is easily remedied by cancelling the IM install portion when it comes up and re-opening Notes. But it would be nice to have an INI setting that works to ignore this setup.

You are getting installing Notes and setting up Notes confused. They are two seperate processes. The installer uses setup.ini to do the initial install of the Notes bits, then Notes setup runs when you run the client the first time. The client setup does not use anything in setup.ini (I can see how this could be confusing). You need to get the IM_NO_SETUP parameter into the Notes.ini for the client to not prompt for Sametime info during setup. Please go read the tech note.
