Updating views

After setting log_update=2, I found that updating views was triggered every time when new email cames in, for example:Updating views in test.nsf

Updating test.nsf view ‘All: test1’

Updating test.nsf view ‘All: test2’

Finished updating views in test.nsf

Full text indexing documents in test.nsf

I have other views like “All: test3” and all these views have same formula to select same form.

My questions are:

  1. Why the view “All: test3” is not updating as view “All: test2”? Does the Domino server automatically pick up which view to be updated or does it depend on view’s setting?

  2. What are the events to trigger the updating views? Currently I just found the new incoming email can trigger it.

Thanks.

Subject: Updating views

Yong,

As long as your views have all been accessed, then they’ve all been built. In that case, they’ll all be updated. I guess that you haven’t opened view3 yet ??? So the indexer won’t update it, because it’s not going to build that view unless a user asks for it explicitly by opening it.

Views will be updated if:

  1. The router delivers mail (your case)

  2. A user makes manual updates to documents

  3. Replicator delivers mail

  4. Interestingly, scheduled agent updates will not trigger the indexer task to run against views in the db, however.

Note that once the indexer decides to update views in your db, it will update all views which might possibly have these docs.

hope this helps,

raphael

Thanks a lot for your information.

You are right. After I open view 3, it is in the updating list when new email coming.

When you say “As long as your views have all been accessed”, will the access from background agent count? My view 2 is a hidden view and it cannot be accessed through notes client or web browser, it is in the updating list.

Yong,

yes, if you open/refresh the view from a background agent, that also counts. The view will now have been accessed, it’s index size will be greater than 0kb, and the update task will now update it along with other views when needed.

Check also that the view update settings under View Properties/Advanced/Refresh and Discard are identical to your test1 and test2 views.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I checked the setting, all are using default setting.

Refresh: Auto, after first use

Discard: After 45 days …

Subject: RE: Updating views

Are the view columns also identical, same fields, same formulas, same sorting?

If a field changes on the document which is created using the Form which you have in the view selection formula, is listed in a view column, it will also cause the view to be refreshed.

Subject: RE: Updating views

The columns are different.

I think that response from Raphael L. Savir should be right. It depends on the access to views.

Thanks a lot for your help.
