Unknown runtime error

Hi there,

our users receive an error using iNotes with Internet Explorer 8. When they try to send an email, there’s an error message which says that there was a problem with the operation (the german error message is “Aufgrund eines aufgetretenen Problems ist der aktuelle Vorgang möglicherweise fehlgeschlagen.”). When opening the error console, the whole log looks like this:

Also the internet explorer itself shows the small error icon at the bottom with the “Unknown runtime error”. In Firefox it works fine.

Has anybody an idea? I’ve not seen a posting regarding this error. Maybe installing the FP1 would be an idea…

Subject: Happening while adding disclaimer text

If it’s all possible, trying to making disclaimer text simpler may solve the problem. The symptom may be specific to a particular server configuration. Hitting Detail button after going to console would provide more info including configuration, which would help support team to diagnose the problem.

Hi Bernhard,

The console indicates that IE8 is in use. Quickly tried to reproduce this with IE8 and another setting for iNotes server seen in the console log enabled, but couldn’t reproduce the issue. So there is a possibility that the problem is specific to client environment.

If you hit F12 in IE8, go to script tab, make sure the 5th icon in the tool bar (Break On Error) is on, and hit Start Debugging, IE8 stops when the error happens. It’ll pinpoint where in Btw() function caused the problem and will help support folks to diagnose further.

I’ve debugged with IE8 and it stops at the “CDe.innerHTML=BpP” method call inside the Btw() function. If i understand it correctly, it happens when the “BpP” string, that contains our disclaimer, is written in the html document. The disclaimer has 1.688 characters in length and looks like that:

As you said in your first post, i replaced it some time ago with a more simple disclaimer (don’t know how many chars exaclty) without success. Do we have to remove the disclaimer completely? Is there a known limitation of disclaimer length or a limited string length in IE?

Hi Benhard,

CDe object is a simple

defined in s_StdPageEdit form. A suspect is the content of CDe object has become unchangeable somehow (IE’s bug, etc.).

One thing to try is typing the following at the bottom of console (the first tab at the right in script debugging screen) and hiting Enter, once the debugger stops at the error:

var CDe = document.createElement(‘div’)

CDe object will be replaced with a new

. If you hit F5 after then, your disclaimer may be successfully inserted. If it happens, try changing Btw() function in s_StdPageEditCodeSubForm subform, replacing CRM(“ConvertDiv”) with document.createElement(‘div’). There are two places like that. The problem may be solved by that, and if so, entering a PMR would be a good idea. Support may ask for VMWare image to determine the right solution from their perspective, and it’d be nice if you can do so.

Hi Akira - thank you again! It feels good that there’s somebody who helps us with this issue.

Yes, calling the createElement method in the debug console works fine - the disclaimer is inserted correctly. But as i see, also if I don’t enter the createElement method and just skip the error by pressing F5, the disclaimer is added successfully. It seems like the error itself raises no problems.

I want to change the Btw() function as you mentioned. The subform is located in the Forms85.nsf - correct? I cannot change the scripts inside since ACL prohibits changes for any user by default. Only the local servers have manager access. How can i change the Btw() function?

sorry, i have to revise my post:

  • the disclaimer gets added to the mail, but only shows at the “Sent” folder. The recipient doesn’t get the disclaimer [it seems that it’s not part of the actual mail that has been sent]

  • also the document.createElement(‘div’) doesn’t solve the problem. i managed to change it in the forms85.nsf script but the error still occurs when the disclaimer is passed to the CDe.innerHTML variable

so, “back to start”… I’m currently trying to set up a work arround since our IE user are quite upset about the issue.

okay - after doing some research i came across a forum entry (http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22946) where i saw that the problem might be caused by a html tag that the IE doesn’t like.

After some tag-testing i removed the

tag from the disclaimer (while debugging) and replaced it with a
line break aaaaaaaaand: the problem is gone (as far as i see).

I’ve now removed it from mail policy as well. I’ll wait till the new disclaimer is pushed to iNotes as well and will then test again.

It looks like the whole problem is really based on the simple paragraph “

” tag

It’s a great news that the problem has been solved!

I hope the bug in IE has been fixed already. We are working on a safer (meaning trying to abort browser bug as possible) code to put the disclaimer for future release and hoping that it will be a remedy, too.
