Unable to load Notes client

OK, so I was at training today and the discussion of various platforms came up. I had to defend Lotus Notes/Domino several times against supposed quirks in the product. I argued that OK, maybe there is some problems, but overall, the product seems to work well.

So, I get home and check my email. There are 70 odd messages that I need to deal with. I respond to the messages that don’t need my immediate action. There are several other messages that do need my action, so I open a VPN session with work, connect to my desktop PC, and use it to deal with those emails. As I make these changes, I respond to the emails and just save them as draft, since with the VPN session, I am more or less connected to the office and the original Internet location will not work to send the emails or resolve Notes names.

After finishing up the emails that need to be dealt with, I disconnect the VPN session and attempt to send my collection of ~30 odd emails. It doesn’t work, can’t connect to pass through server. OK, something is screwed up with the IP configuration from the VPN session, so I will just restart Notes, leave the email in the local outgoing mail.box, and send it after I connect. So I restart Notes, still won’t connect, can’t find server.

Deep breath, OK, so maybe Windows is screwed up with the IP config (even though Firefox works fine.) So, I restart Windows and try to open Notes. Notes decides to take over Windows with a NSD and after ~15 minutes, I hold down the power key until Windows stops and then restart Windows. Now, I am unable to start Notes. If I am paying attention and Notes decides to throw up the NSD notice for the approximately .000083 seconds it is visible for, I can see that Notes is deciding not to load. If I am watching the Windows task manager, I can see the nsd task for several minutes while the debug info is written.

So I try restarting Windows a couple of times to try to clear up whatever is wrong with it. Doesn’t seem to help. I deleted cache.ndk and bookmarks.nsf and tried to let Notes recreate them. Doesn’t seem to help (and doesn’t recreate the files.) I deleted all but the first 4 lines of notes.ini to try a clean reset in case there is something wrong with my config, but that doesn’t help either. I get an NSD file when loading, but that doesn’t tell me any useful information as to why Notes won’t start. I have the temp folders specified in my Windows environment variables, so I don’t know what the heck is going on.

I am guessing that I can stop by the office tomorrow morning and copy the mail.box from my laptop to my desktop PC and then send the emails resulting from a couple of hours of work, so hopefully I won’t need to redo that work.

As far as getting Notes to load on my laptop again, any ideas?

Thanks

The first thing i do on my laptop is to delete or uninstall quicy debugger (qnc.exe -U) to not let that *ù%??? program interfere.

Subject: Resolution - Unable to load Notes client

Thanks for the response Ronny.

The problem was a corrupt personal address book. I reinstalled Notes and it still wouldn’t load. I did a scan of my Notes directory and the software I was using told me that names.nsf failed a CRC check (Windows error?).

I copied names.nsf from a different PC, and then Notes loaded fine. I don’t know if Notes fubared the file or if Windows was responsible, but it seems to be working fine now. Nothing I was doing should have caused this corruption to happen, but who knows.

It would be nice if Notes said why it was not able to load, or at least point the user in the right direction instead of just failing.
