Does or will Lotus Notes 8.5 support Linux and specifically Ubuntu 64Bit?
We’re in an age where you can’t even buy a 32bit processor anymore. This means that 32bit app builds should be getting much less attention these days, and much less than 64 bit based builds.
Lotus seems committed in multiple statements they want support Notes in Ubuntu. Even in the Ubuntu 8.04 press release Lotus is quoted:
Most people installing Ubuntu on new hardware with 4GB+ ram are installing Ubuntu 64. Where I work this is our company’s desktop ram requirements now.
I’ve had to install 32 bit libraries just to get Notes 8 installed on my system, and many features don’t work. I can’t connect my Java apps to the native Notes shared library code, which means my development efforts must still be performed in Windows.
IBM are probably bored of my posts here where I keep stating that some of us have to use 64-bit. We run loads of VMs because we deal with issues, proof of concept, or demo’ing IBM stuff. We cannot carry around servers all the time, which is why we use a powerful notebooks with oodles of RAM, and external 2.5" SATA2 7200RPM drives.
I found it not straight forward to install on 64-bit but I can get everything to work fine as a user, and it is remarkably stable. I do not use it as you mentioned with other java apps. I have seen a customer struggle with paging whilst using a java based CAD type application on XP, Notes 8.0.1 basic. OK not Notes causing the paging here, but an example of some user who does actually need 64-bit.
Unfortunately we are the minority and I do see the fact that most business workstations will run fine with 1GB RAM and 32-bit excluding Vista.
Linux Quickr Connectors are missing but you can’t install these even on Win64. I saw a tech note that for Notes 8.0.2 and the QConnectors on Win that we should request this feature for a future release… GRRR… I need them now for a site with worth using 8.0.2.
Since you like Ubuntu, please have a read and comment on my previous thread :
… I strongly agree, we would be very glad for a smooth possibility to run Lotus Notes 8.5 on Ubuntu 64 bit.I do not ask for a native 64bit client (although I would prefer it), any documented and supported path to install & run Notes 8.5 on 64bit Linux / Ubuntu would be very helpful.
We have technical influencers as well as important decision makers craving for this.
Yes that guide is pretty much spot on. I did try and run through the package list provided by the release notes, and downloaded i386 of these (don’t know if they are correct) :

Extract and copy the packages above and the ones suggested by that link.
install ia32-libs, reboot and update Ubuntu, reboot.
Install Notes :
sudo dpkg -i --force-architecture
I now don’t notice any issues with Notes. Only the Sametime Advanced Plugins - Chat Rooms feature seem to hang the client a bit till they get going after a minute. Seems to be just in Notes, which would make me thing the plugins are not compatible with the 8.5 Beta client.
