Type ahead in 8.5.1 does not work like it used to

Myself and a number of users have upgraded to 8.5.1 and noticed that the type ahead on new emails doesn’t work like it used to.

If you hit enter/semi-colon to quickly after typing… it does not work. (unless of course that name is already in your local address book)

If you hit backspace and then hit enter/semi-colon, it does not work.(again unless the name is in your local address book)

These both worked in 8.5 and is already one of our biggest complaints.

Anyone else notice this?

I have seen similiar issues but there are a couple of seetings you can check to see if they are all set the same.1. File–Preferences–Basic Notes client config.

Do you have the option checked "Disable Type Ahead for all names fields and use the Notes Basic Type-ahead?

  1. In you Location settings of Contacts under the Mail tab, The Field Activate recipient name type-ahead = On Delimiter or on each character?

  2. Name lookup = Check all address book or Local only?

My settings are use basic type-ahead, On delimiter, and check all address books. When typing last name and press comma I get prompted for all entries from both local and public address books.

When I change settings to Basic type-ahead off, and on each character, as I type a name into to: field I get the option to lookup and it does find all names both local and public address books.

Hope that help

The multiple options give you a range of different looks and feels to the type ahead. Each has advantages/disadvantages. I just played with them, and can’t find any unexpected delays or behavior regardless of the setting(s).

Subject: Not using basic type ahead.

  1. I saw this in another thread already, but I already know the basic type ahead works ok. The standard client type ahead is what’s changed and problematic.

  2. On character (as it was before)

  3. Set to exhaustively check all address books.

These settings are all carried over from the previous settings… it’s clearly just a quirk with the type ahead in the 8.5.1 standard client.

Subject: Same problem here

I’ve upgraded now and see exactly the same problem.

It sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t, but more often than not doesn’t.u

I use return always, and it just doesn’t retrieve any addresses. I can’t tab out of the field either, but if I click elsewhere (in the cc field for example), it’ll then look up the address and pop up the old-style dialog if necessary.

This is annoying, and as I’m the first to test this out it might delay our roll out

Subject: type ahead 8.5.1

I have not noticed the problem, and none of my users have reported it (though I only have a handful on 8.5.1). I just finished pounding on it to see if I could spot delays, and it worked fine with both local and company addresses.

One question: why are you hitting semicolon? Addresses are separated by commas, and the system does it automatically when you hit enter. In fact, hitting semicolon on mine does the same thing as “Enter” if I am part way through an address. If the “To:” is blank or I’m at the end of an address, pressing the semicolon key does nothing (which I’m assuming is to prevent problems with users coming from systems where the semicolon is used as a separator).
