Just tried to install the 6.5 client on a Powerbook running Panther and get a message saying that Classic Support is required. I had previously installed it on 10.2.8 with no problem. Just wondering if anyone knows of a way around this (short of installing Classic Support).

Be very carefull about using Notes in Panther. I hope your Powerbook is not for production but a test machine only.
Reading this forum, you will find that user have had mixed fortuns with Notes on 10.3.
Some are using it OK.
Here in my company, it’s a complete horror:
crash of the Notes install program
crash of Notes itselfs
not being able to run it even in classic
our main problem is that we could not find a clear patern to explain this.

I have been using the 6.5 client on two Panther PowerBooks: one that was upgraded from 10.2.8, and one that was a fresh install. I have had no problems.
What problems are you experiencing?

I Am using Notes 6.5 on Panther 10.3 or actually 10.3.2 now. It is running stable (including OS X) and fast on my power PC 733 MHz with 512MB memory.
The only problem I had was that the installer refused to install the Notes 6.5 client if the installer was on the same volume where it should install the Notes client. I had the same problem while installing Notes 6.0. The installer told me that I did not had enough disk space while about 9 GB was available. Since I have two partitions (OS9 HFS+ and a OSX HFS+ on my Mac, I moved the installer to the OS9 partition, launched it and let it install Notes 6.5 on the OSX partition.
As a Windows system administrator, I Am more interested in the Mac from a technical point of view and for this just playing around on the Mac (and try to do my work with it) for a year now.
Of all the installations I did from scratch or not, I noticed that a new feature on the install disc of Panther can avoid you a lot of trouble. Its a tool that let you check the permissions of your HFS+ volumes.
Some installers do modify your permissions in a way that makes your whole Mac unstable.
Boot from the Panther CD and select from the menu Disk Utility. Select your OS X volume and select repair Disk permissions. You’ll be surprised. Beware that you can only repair permissions when your volume can be unmounted.
