After installing beta 2 we’ve got some trouble with searching. The full-text index of databases gets really huge (DB Size 256 MB, index size 479 MB) and searching in attached documents (PDF for example) does not work. We deleted the index (waited until the ft folder is deleted from file system) and recreated it. Nothing. No search results are displayed.
HiWe’re using Notes to share ppt’s and similar objects. The main content f such dbs are attachments! Thus if they aren’t indexable it’s a BIG issue for us.
Please explain what you mean by “attachment is not support well on Mac”? and
" …option should be disabled in the Create Full-Text Index …will fix this issue the next release."
Subject: Thanks for your feedback, could you pls provide more information?
Thanks for your feedback!
About " searching in attached documents (PDF for example) does not work", this is a known issue since Mac Notes 8.0.1. I will reopen it on Mac Notes 8.5.
Bug ID: ZQSA79EACL
About huge index files, could you please provide more information for us?
What template is your database? I have created index for my mail DB, the index size is normal. After I checked “Index attached files” checkbox, DB size 310 MB, index size 159 MB, unchecked it, index size is 20 MB.
I have discussed huge index files issue with developer. Because of index of attachment is not support well on Mac Notes, so the “Index attached files” option should be disabled in the Create Full-Text Index dialog in V85 Codestream. The developer team will fix this issue the next release.
I hate to say this, but v9 is not an option here in my opinion.
8.5 is supposed to be the version at which Notes on the Mac begins to achieve feature parity with the Windows version. Yes, we know about Designer and Admin, and we know about specific other exceptions (Java etc), but Full-Text Index capability is a given as far as Notes goes.
Worse, this is a feature you will be REMOVING, having had it work successfully in previous releases, and had the menus present in all versions up until now.
I ask that you reconsider this decision, and make it an urgent requirement for 8.5.1 at the latest.
I wanted to clear up some confusion on this issue.
Full text indexing of Notes content is supported and available on the Mac - we will work to address any issues in 8.5 that are found in this area of functionality. What is not supported is full text indexing and search of attachments on the Mac platform. We rely upon third party code for indexing of attachments and this code has not been made available on the Mac, and this is not a new issue to Notes 8.5.
We are investigating support of this functionality for a future release and expect it to be delivered in 8.5.1 or as soon as possible thereafter.
It is just local FT indexing of attachments on a Mac that is the issue, Correct?
If I have database on a Domino server I can still FT Index it and it’s attachments and Mac client users will be able to the FT search in that database to find things in those attachments.
Yes its regrettable that attachments will not be FT indexed locally on the Mac platform in 8.5, but really with all the changes that are going into 8.5, Lotus must prioritize on what will be of the greatest benefit to the greatest number of users. Its not unreasonable in the macro view of the world. Ok flame me now. V
Subject: Yes, it depends on local FT indexing only
If your databases rely on a Domino server, your FT indexing of attachments will work. On local replicas only the index over the Notes documents will work.
And to the perspective thing: You’re right. The majority of people is using server based applications and so they won’t have any trouble with indexing local files. But on the other hand taking databases and files to a notebook for example is one of the strengths of Notes. There are a lot of people travelling around and working with their applications offline.
Some are using 3G or EDGE or whatever to connect from the outside which makes searching on server replicas a lot slower.
I really hope that the dev team will fix it in 8.5.1
maybe it is not new, that searching attachments is not supported on the Mac and so I have to ask two questions:
Why is the option there in the UI to index attachments? Not to confuse end-users, I hope?!
As Stuart wrote we all thought that version 8.5 will be the one where Mac, Windows and Linux are at the same eye level. If you (IBM) have known about the problem and that it wouldn’t be fixed in 8.5, you should have informed the customers.
I really, really hope that you will fix it earlier than in version 9.
Subject: I think you guys have the wrong expectations set
There was never a promise of 100% parity across all three platforms … for instance, the Quickr Connectors are not supported on the Mac and I see no mention of them being there for 8.5. I also believe we will see 8.5 before we see Symphony on the mac.
Yes, this isnt the outcome I want, but don’t set yourselves up for disappointment before the game even begins.
