Transparant application move

Does anyone know the best way of moving a database from one server to another?

I have a big consolidation project comming up and a lot of databases to move. The way I’ve done it so far is to replicate the database to the new server, change server access, changed possible agents and then replaced the original database with a redirect database. This works pretty good except for users that use the database localy and never access the server. It also leave a icon of my redirect database on the users workspace.

I have now also tried to cluster servers and then put the application to ‘Out of service’. This works also OK. But the users still get a box saing ‘Database cannot be found’ - ‘Look for database on server’. When clicking cancel the user will be moved to the new server. Is thats the way it is supposed to be?

I guess my main question is that I want the users to get redirected to the new server as transparant as possible…

Thanks,

Magnus

I guess you could put a database script in the old version which opens the new version on the right server, then closes itself?

Thanks for your response. I have tried that also, but I think it is to much manual work since it is to many databases to move.

Also I don’t think it will redirect users with local replicas.

Does someone have experiance of clustering servers when consolidating?
