Transaction Logging

Is there anyone else out there running Domino on Solaris 10, with Archive style transaction logging enabled, that uses a backup vendor other than IBM’s Tivoli? I have been evaluation Domino 8.5 since it was released. We did not run transaction logging previously, but with the introduction of DAOS, we decided to look deeper into the benefits of Archive-Style transaction logging in order to reduce our nightly backups. Well, numerous updates and hotfixes later, we’re no closer to being able to run this in production. We’ve upgraded our dev environment to Domino 8.5.1, and have applied three hotfixes (currently HF342) but still continue to encounter problems with transaction logging. I’m seeking help from anyone that might have gone through this before. Our backup solution is Symantec’s Netbackup. Currently, Netbackup reports each night that it backs up X number of TXN files and then marks them for recycle. Then the following morning, without a domino restart, once the domino moves on to the next .TXN file (after the one that was active during the backup), then all of the TXN files that were marked for recycle get deleted, instead of being reused. Worse, in Netbackup, when attempting to restore from the incremental backups, there aren’t any TXN files available in the backup database. This has been a very frustrating exercise for me, and I’m hoping that someone else out there has had a similar experience that might help me work through these difficulties.

When you say "Worse, in Netbackup, when attempting to restore from the incremental backups, there aren’t any TXN files available in the backup database. " does netbackup give you an option to do Point-in-Time restore? It may be you don’t see the log files unless you tell it to do PIT restore. A regular restore (not point-in-time) should not require transaction logs to be restored

Subject: Netbackup and the TXN files

You are correct, Netbackup does give us the opportunity to restore point-in-time and that is indeed where we’ve encountered the issues with the TXN files missing. We are able to successfully restore from the full backups, but we’re only running fulls once a week, with nightly incrementals.

Subject: Hmmmm

Not sure what is going on. I know with TSM/TDP the transaction logs are automatically restored based on the point in time you select. I wonder if the TXN files need to be restored manually some how?
