just wondering if each notes database had a formula variable somewhere inside it that kept track of the number of documents that have been created, even ones that have been deleted. (Am needing to create a ticket system on the client side – will use this value for reference when assigning the ticket number.)

No, but you can get the real total number of documents included deleted documents with the server command: show database , which you can of course also launch from a LotusScript agent if you have the sufficent rights to execute server console commands.

Mika – good idea, though I unfortunately don’t have server command access.
Rami – I’d like to (and had it this way to begin with), but my client insisted that I use some kind of sequential “user friendly” based numbering system.
I actually have something working, halfway – it’s a control doc in its own personal view that I manipulate by using @GetDocField and @SetDocField (the view has, as a column, the doc’s UNID) that stores and increments a number, assigning it to each ticket at save time. It works great, but for some darn reason it’s causing a giant red error box upon finishing the save. (Might be something unique to my computer – going to try it on another computer soon.)

Why not simply use @Unique to give a unique key?
