My company recently let our Domino administrator go as a cost-saving measure, and I’m performing the essential admin tasks now, sort-of winging it as I go (and with a rather thick Domino Admin book from Amazon…). It’s going ok, so far - mainly just deleting, registering, and renaming users, but I’ve run into a quirk or two I don’t know the quick way to solve. Specifically, I have a userid that I can sign on to Notes Admin client with on another pc and register, delete, etc. with, but I’d like to be able to do it from my own pc, with the cert.id of course, and not have to be away from my desk working on stuff. My own notes user is a ‘full access administrator’, so I can activate full access and edit a database acl, etc., but when I try to register a new user, it tells me I don’t have authority to do so (I see some stuff in the thick manual about userroles, etc., that are needed to register new users, but I can’t find where in the admin client to set that).
Would someone please give me a quick ‘shopping list’ of settings I’d want to change/add myself to, and how, in order to make myself a fully functional administrator? I’m sure there are other things I just haven’t run into yet that I’ll need to ‘activate’ myself for that I don’t know about, but maybe y’all here do
Subject: Took over administration for Domino 6.5.4 server - need a couple of tips
I feel your pain. I’m in an admin role for exactly the same reason. The good news is that, for the most part, I don’t need to spend much time at all doing admin work - the system pretty much runs itself (caution - small site with < 300 users and mail is not Notes so YMMV).
I’d start by putting your name into the localdomainadmin group. If your environment is anywhere close to typical, that alone should fix ya up.
If not, then look at how this other user is set up and just mimic the ACL entries. Note: ACLs can be set at the db level without access to the admin client so there isn’t any place special you need to go to put your id into roles.
You need to also make sure you demand help from your business. They made a decision based on cost. They need to A) Send you to training so you can be an admin.
B) Provide you with contract help when needed to get you through the start up curve.
C) Recognize that there ain’t no free lunch. Administration is a skill that takes time to develop and, if done poorly, can result in the collapse of your entire Notes infrastructure. They’re gonna pay now to get you up to speed or pay later when everything falls to crap.
My advice is go for option B right now so you don’t muck things up by changing something important without realizing the risks.
Also, if you have an id that seems to work, why not put it on a thumb drive and just carry it with you? Need to play admin, switch IDs and you should be good to go.
