Too many Server Tasks under Domino 6.5 / Suse 8.2 Linux

Hello!

Our domino server (Domino 6.5, Suse 8.2, pentium IV-2,4GH, 1,6 GB Ram) is often very slow. I think, with only 50 Users there is no reason for being slow. But the server runs over 400 domino tasks or threads (most of them are server tasks, but there are also more then 20 smtp or 30 imap task running). Why does´nt the server end the threads - the are still showed as ‘quiet’ or ‘ruht’. The can´t be in use any more.

How to tell the server not to open so many tasks?

Are all your user connecting to the server using a R6 or R6.5 client? How many mail boxes are on the server? This is needed to answer the SMTP question. When you server has this many tasks running if you do a “show users” on the server console are there many users with a high idle time?

Have you made sure that Domino has exclusive user of SMTP and IMAP ports? (Meaning there is not any other mail program trying to use these ports?)

Feel free to email me if you want to share detail of your situation via email rather than the forum.

Hello Joe,

thank you for your helping!

There are only Notes R 6.5 clients in use, some Users use the browser- or an IMAP-client to connect to thier mailboxes. Sometimes, when I look how many users are connectet, I can see, that one user has 10 or 15 connection alive. This one User is not everytime the same user.

But if I do a >show task< on the domino server console, then there are only 40 Task listet and not like (maximum) 650 Threads, that will be listet if you look at processes with the >ps -A< on the linux suse shell.

I did not found any other actions (form other mail servers/clients) on the IMAP or on the SMPT ports.

After serverstart you can see the attached pstree. At maximum the server processes will be more than 200 intances, here with 31 intances (look for 1. ‘>>’ at begin of line in pstree). And there are also many of intances with .sh (look for 2. ‘>>’ at begin of line in pstree). Is that ok?

here is the pstree:

Hi Gerd,

Did you find out what was causing this? We are experiencing a similar problem - one of our servers seems to start loads of server threads until it can’t handle anymore and the system becomes unavailable, although we are running a redhat system.

Also like you when you look in the domino administrator you only see a small number of server tasks, but from within linux there are way more of them running!

TIA,

Craig.
