To upgrade domino server do we need fresh installation?

Dear Forum members,

I want to update out domino server from 7.x to domino 8.5.1 on the same existing hardware and environment(windows server 2003).

Now the doubt is what is the best way to do that, do I run the setup on the old existing domino7.x installation or do a fresh installation after backup the data and mail files?

thanking you in anticipation

Subject: No uninstall needed

I usually just install the new version right over the old one. I might remove old templates aftarwards, but usually not. Never had a problem doing this.

Subject: I agree - no uninstall is probably needed

…but since it only takes a couple minutes, I started doing that a couple years ago to be able to better clean up old files from old versions of Notes.

Most of my servers have been running since early-to-mid version 4, so with all the changes over time, it makes me feel better.

Subject: I usually uninstall the old version…

I usually uninstall the old version, and do a little cleanup before installing the new.

The uninstall will remove the old templates - but leave all the files that you need (such as Notes.ini) intact.

Notes databases are not affected by the uninstall, so the system should be happy as peach pie.
