Timezone difference

Hi

In our one of Notes client application users enters ticket information the client which they support from different geographical area, now the question arrives when lets for example.,

User selects

Date – date time field (Notes inbuilt)

time : time fields (Notes inbuilt)

Zone : like IST, EST,. etc ( combobox)

Now when user selects EST then it should give the time difference between selected date time in EST and current Date time in EST . this would happen for all the time zone when they selects,

i am having one computed field that would display the value for the date time difference.

did any body have done this kind of thing earlier, then pleaes help me how to resolve this…

thanks

Hi Stephen,

First, thank you so much for you better looking into the problem

Let me give me some idea about what i was looking for.

Lets say, for example if i am support Europe customer, and they have raised the ticket , now once we got some solution and we would enter into the tool and enter the time like

at 05th may 2009 @ 10:30:00 (24 Hrs ) and submit first update,

and when we got the final solution, the we would be entring second i mean final update like 11:30:00 (24hrs) EST.

Note : in this case we are in different time zone. & we only enter time date when ticket is opened, whenever we are giving update it would automatically count time date- time difference like

05/05/2009 @ 10:30:00 EST - 05/05/2009 @ 11:30:00 (this would take current time in the EST zone, we wont enter this manually, i mean it would calculate automatically in that time zone)…

Note : this case would be considering for any time zone.

Please help if you get something around.

thanks

Dev

Subject: RE: timezone difference

As Stan stated and I tried to convey in my first e-mail. It doesn’t matter. Now is Now everywhere around the world (13:54 EDT, 15:24 NDT, or 11:24pm in Bagalore, India).

Think of it this way, when you enter a date and time it’s AS IF (not exacly) Lotus Notes takes the time date time you entered and stores it as GMT no matter where in the world you are located.

Therefore when you open the document Lotus Notes takes that time and converts it automatically to your time zone (based on your setting).

The document would show: 3:54 EDT, 15:24 NDT, or 11:24pm in Bagalore, India to each of us.

Therefore when you enter the “completed” time the calculation is based upon the End Time in your time zone (or the time zone of the person marking it completed). Therefore the elapsed time is Your Local Closing time minus the Start Time in your time zone (which notes does automatically).

Having said that, Is the problem because someone is NOT entering the information when the event occurs? That is, it’s some later time and they only know the request was made (e-mailed for example) at 1pm from France?

Again, it doesn’t matter. Each of you should be seeing the time and date in your own zone, provided that you are using a proper Date/Time field.

First to “nit pick” I think you mean Eastern Time (ET) and not EST - which means Eastern Standard Time.

What the difference? Well, 1 hour in North America as most of North America is now observing EDT.

Can you better explain why you need this time conversion?

If I open a ticket at June 1st 1pm EDT and YOU close the ticket at June 10th 1pm in Bangalore (Z+5:30?)

Basic date time calculations can be used to determine the amount of time that’s past. You don’t need to convert either to ET or Z+5:30.

Again if the fields are true date times. The displayed Dates/Times should be based upon the user settings.

Therefore:

I would see the ticket as starting: June 1 1pm EDT and closed at June 10th 3:30am EDT

You would see Opened at June 1, 10:30pm Z+5:30 and closed at June 10th 1:00pm Z+5:30

In each case the answer is 8 days 14h and 30 minutes

But that is assuming that’s what you’re looking for?

If you’re users just want to know what time it is in another time zone… Well I would just use this tool:
