To reproduce:
Open this database in the notes client on server notes1/notesweb anonymously.
Select “Mark all read” in any view.
Red box of death appears everytime.

Unread marks work by storing a combination of username and the document id (doc id? Note id?) to populate the unread mark table. If you try to access anonymously via notes, that may cause a problem.
I have to say I’m surprised you got that far; I’m fairly sure I needed to send a safe copy of my id to be cross-certified before I could access via Notes.
