** The nice free RHPop3Connect.ntf POP3 mail gateway...anyone able to download mail over 100 KB with it? **

I’m using RHPOP3Connect.ntf as an agent as some of you also use it to retrieve pop3 mail. It works nicely if you have small messages to retrieve from your users. But…

Problem is if there are any messages to be retrieved and they are about 100 KB or more in size then it won’t download it. Console shows:

09/10/2003 08:43:23 PM SMTP Server: WEBMAIL.NET (192.168.0.1) connected

At this point it does not do anything more. CPU is 100% constantly unless I stop amgr or smtp (it then disconnects). It’s supposed to say the same as above after a few seconds except it should now say “…disconnected.” It eventually does say disconnected (after about 5 minutes of hogging my cpu usage at 100%), but then when it checks for pop3 mail again it goes through the same process. It never does download that e-mail though!

I tried contacting the author several times but he’s not responding to my e-mails either because he only speaks German or he’s just being a prick pretending to be busy or something.

ANY help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Andy Hurane.

Subject: Who is being a p****?

You should know that free or open source things come “as is” with no express or implied warranty.

If he has not answered your email, it may simply be:

  1. You were as cordial in your email as you were in your post here; or

  2. He is away and does not have access to his mail to reply;

  3. He is looking at the problem so he can give you a good response (not that you desrve one from him now anyway).

Perhaps your contribution could be to find out what is causing the problem and offering a fix.

Just for kicks, did you make any changes to the code you downloaded?

Subject: RE: Who is being a p****?

Heh…I was only being as cordial as I thought HE deserved after asking him NICELY the first 3 times without a word in return…even a “I don’t szprechen ze english” would’ve suffice.

For kicks, no, I did not make changes to his code. If I knew java I wouldn’t even bother him and just rewrite it myself.

However, I do know others in this forum have used this agent so if someone would be so nice as to at least tell me if they have the same problem then at least I know where I stand.

Telling me that P***k is a swear word is childish…he deserver a harsher word than that for being so ignorant. The excuses I was given for him not responding could not be…vacation? Unless he gets 6 months of vacation then OK. I’ve written him 3 times during the course of 6 months. All for nothing unfortunately.

Yes, it’s free software. So I shouldn’t expect much, but I think a humanly response would be nice “like sorry, can’t help you, whatever…or try this, etc.”

Obviously, nobody can help me so I’ll simply shuv that good for nothing agent u know where and try to find another one…one that’s done by someone who speaks/writes English and REPLIES to people who ask for help nicely the first time!

And if the author was disinclined to help before, he certainly will be now…

Subject: support w/ free software

I’ll never understand why people expect people who write free software to support it well :-)BTW, I think swearing is against forum rules…

And so is posting multiple times in quick succession. (No, it’s not accidental if you change the subject line to include more asterisks for “eye appeal”.)

Subject: RE: support w/ free software

Believe it or not that was accidental. If the ibm server would load the page after clicking “Post” then this would not have happened. So, thinking I typed all that for nothing, I tried typing it again (I was smart enough to copy into clipboard as this stuff happens).

Subject: RE: support w/ free software

Wow, if I was the author of that agent I would be sure to bundle a nasty virus along with a response to your message.

Detach the class files from the agent, decompile them, and recompile your own versions with debugging code in them. You can find free Java decompilers by searching the Internet. This will be a lot more work than being abusive to Rolf, but it will also be a lot more effective.
