Text not visible in Read mode if message from 6.54 client to (slightly) customized 8.5 mail template

I’m making a slight customization to the 8.5 mail template so that there is a field that will let users classify a message (a pseudo-foldering process, but without having to drag the message). We’ve used this customization on prior versions of the mail template - it’s a subform that we drop in the memo, reply, reply with history, etc.

In 8.5, however, I’m seeing weird behavior. IF you send a message from a 6.5 client to this modified 8.5 mail file, you don’t see the label in read-mode. If you put the doc in Edit mode, you see it. If you save the document and then open it in read mode, you see it.

I’ve tried sending from the following mail templates & client combinations: (fail means you can’t see the text in read mode)

inotes6 template & 6.5.4 client: fail

extR6mail template & 6.5.4 client: fail

Stdr85mail template & 8.5 client: pass

Stdr85mail template & 6.5.4 client: fail

I’ve checked the Form field on the document at the destination - it’s “Memo”. I’ve updated all of the memo-related forms that I can find. I’ve tried adding the fields directly to the form instead of using the subform - no help.

The label doesn’t have any hide-when settings.

Any ideas of what else I can try? It’s going to take a while to get everyone upgraded to 8.5 and I don’t want to cause users confusion if at all possible.

Thanks in advance,

Julie
