Text field capacity ? (over web)

Hi all

i have a web based application in which iam retrieving values contained in a TEXT field.

The text field is a HTML generated field such as this one

The problem is when i retrieve the values in the HTML field using a web agent the values gets splitted after certain amount of characters.

for eg. consider the value contained in the webfield is as given below

adbdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzftihj

now on processing by the agent iam getting the values in notes as

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuv wxyz ftih j

note the spaces occuring. due to this my application fails to produce correct results.

the maximum amount of characters i can process without error is about 300. if i process characters more than 300 my application fails. it doesnt produce any type of notes errors.

it just fails . i tried replacing the text field with TExt Area . but still the error occurs.

is it due to the capacity limitation of Web text field or any kind of brwser issue or notes incompliance or Agent incompatibility??

any body had experienced suxh type of situations ??

Help on this is Greatly Appreciated.

thanks and Regards

JV

I’ve seen similar kind of problem when printing text from agent to web browser. If you describe what exact steps are required to reproduce the error, I’ll try it on my computer and see what can be done.

If possible, check using a network sniffer tool whether data is broken already before it reaches the Domino server.

Hai Andrei

Thanks for asking. Here is the steps by which you can experience the result by yourself.

  1. just create a form and place a computed Rich text field or Text field named " sample" with default value=“sample” itself.

  2. now just type the following HTML code over or below the field and mark it as passthru HTML.

Please note that the Webfield name and Notes field name should be same otherwise it would not work. also the Notes field should be computed.

  1. now create a Agent to get the webfield values and print back the same to the browser to view the output you’ve got.

use the following code for the agent to process the webfield value. Note Enter many characters in the Webfield manually and click the submit button.

set db=ss.currentdatabase

set webdoc =ss.documentcontext

now get the web field values using the code below

webfldvalue=webdoc.getitemvalue(“sample”)(0)

now print back the same to the browser to see the ouput or you can use msgbox to see the output on Server’s Log file

just use the following code

print webfldvalue (to print the output to browser)

or use

Msgbox webfldvalue (to view the output in Server’s Logfile)

  1. Note that if you use msgbox and view the o/p in logfile then you will notice the character occuring as follows

eg. originalvalue given - abcdefghijklmnopqestuvwxyz

eg. Msgbox o/p - abcdefghijklmnopqrstuv

                                 wxyz

in webbrowser it will occur as spaces

eg. orginalvaluegiven - abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

eg. print o/p - abcdefghijklmno pqrstu vwxyz

notice the difference. When you view source the webpage then you can find the carriage return like characters occuring there.

Also note that this Error occurs for characters more than 300 i think.

Hope this Helps to Reproduce the Error. Please try it and Notify me if you find any Problems in Generating this Error.

VJ.

I tested your example and getting same results as you. I’ll do more tests, but it looks like there is not much hope.A space character is inserted after each 80 characters.
