Temporary disable incoming SMTP mail

I have to upgrade a Domino server from 7.02 to 8.5. I am running McAfee GroupShield 5.3 and have to upgrade this to GroupShield 7, which is supported for Domino 8.5.

After completing the upgrade of the Domino server I first want to setup the new GroupShield 7.0 for Domino before new mail is incoming.

Can I temprorary disable incoming internet (SMTP) mail by checking off the SMTP listener task in the server document?

Subject: Disabling SMTP

If you disable the smtp task attempts to deliver mail to your mail server will fail. The senders will attempt to deliver after a specified interval. An alternative may be to pause or stop the router. This will queue messages in mail.box. This doc just came out a week ago. http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21382161&loc=en_US&cs=UTF-8&lang=en

Thanks for your replies. Our Mail provider, who routes the mail to this Domino SMTP server, buffers the mail for 2 days. Our Domino server install, inclusive the McAfee GroupShield for Domino, will take some hours. When server is up and running and McAfee GroupShield for Domino is scanning for virusses, I would enable the SMTP task again.I don’t know if Tell SMTP quit is an option, because after installing the server and upgrading the design of the Domino Directory, I will start the Domino server to check if clients can connect and if the Domino Service is running oke.

After that I want to install McAfee GroupShield for Domino. I want stop mail from incoming as long as McAfee GroupShield is not set up because of possible virusses, unwanted programs and so on.

Subject: Disabling SMTP - install of GroupShield 7.0

If you’re upgrading from GroupShield 5.3 to 7.0 you need to make sure you install patch1 and patch2, otherwise you’ll have dead mail that cannot be scanned/routed (Had this issue).

As for disabling the SMTP, the domino server/services need to be shut down, you cannot install/upgrade with the server up and running.

There is a newer version of groupshield, it’s now called Mcafee Security for email, the version is 7.5. Not sure if you can upgrade from 5.3 though. Here is the link - http://www.mcafee.com/us/enterprise/products/content_security_email_web/email/security_email_servers.html

Subject: GroupShield

Thank you for your reply. Sorry for the delay.During the server upgrade, I installed GroupShield 7.0 with SP1 and SP2. Everything worked fine from september 24 (the day of the upgrade). One week ago I upgraded the server to Domino 8.5.1. and yesterday, november 10 the Dominoserver started crashing. Fatal thread in NSD was about mailboxscanner, so I searched Mcafee’s knowledgebase and found this exact the same issue. There was an hotfix but this was retired when McAfee Security 7.5 became available. So yesterday I installed McAfee Sec. for email server 7.5 over GroupShield 7.0. Now the server is running almost 24 hours.

So be aware of Domino 8.5.1 on Windows, with groupShield 7.5 with SP1 and SP2. Upgrade to Mcafee Security for email servers ASAP!

Yes, that will avoid the SMTP task starting when the server starts. You can also “tell smtp quit” at the Domino server console to shut down the SMTP service while the server is running.
