I am looking for a definative answer to this question:In a mixed mode domain (Domino Release 7 with a number of Domino Release 6 and 5) if I upgrade the Administration server to Domino Release 7 is it safe to allow replication of the “out the box” templates to the Domino release 5 and 6 sevrers? On previous migrations Ive always moved the templates from the data folder (apart from pubnames and admin4) until all servers have been upgraded.

HI There… the best way would be to take back of all the template on admin server. Upgrade the server, replace all the new template and replace the templates from the backup.
Replicating the backup template in mixed enviroment would not be a issue.

Thanks for the reply.So in essence put back all the Domino 6 templates after upgrading to release 7. I assume its Ok to replicate the admin4 and pubnames templates from Domino 7 to the mixed mode servers running 6 and 5, correct?
Once all the servers have been upgraded to Domino 7, then replace the Domino 6 templates with the Domino 7 templates. Correct? Is this the prefered upgrade route?

Well depending on number of server, its always easy to upgrade the hub and then follow the spock servers.
In this process, we generaly dont updrade any template / databases to avoide any complications.
Its always best pratice to upgrade the binary files first i.e running Domino R 7 with Domino 6 templates. Since the ODS version has not changed between R6 and R7 you would not have to worry much of that.
Once, you have upgraded all the server to R7, ( Test all templates in test enviroment ) you could migrate the desgin of admin4 , log , events and followed by names ( names in the end to make sure you have done testing and verification for all the application running which do name look up or need workflow ).
Once you have done the same. You could then updrage the clients to R7 ( Make sure you have R7 cleint already installed before you updrade your fist admin server to R7 ). After which you could upgrade the mail file design.

Ok. Thank you for your answer. Ive tried variations to the template replication theme during upgrades - with varying degrees of success. I wanted to get a general consensus from other Administrators as to a pref method. So thanks for your feedback.
