TCP/IP error

Hi friends,I am facing a problem

some user sometimes getting error message “The remote server is not a known TCP/IP hosts” when access their mail box. But the server is running perfectly. this message comes some times not always. But when i created connection document for the same server the users mail file resides then it opens mail without any problem. I just want to know why this error message come.

Thanks in advance

Without a connection document, Notes uses the operating system’s DNS and routing settings to find the server. If the client is unable to contact the server using the settings in the client’s OS, then you will see that message.

For the record, that message also appears when the network link is down.

HTH.

But you would also get this message if the network link was down and you had a connection document. Network being up is key. If you can ping by name - that is a good test.

ping servername

some of our users are also having the same problem? The network link is never down and they have connection documents. Although they can ping the ip address of the server they cannot ping the DNS hostname. A quick fix is to run ipconfig /renew, but why is this happening to the same users now and again? Is there some setting in Windows they need to alter.

If they can contact the IP address but not the name, then there’s something going on with their DNS settings. Make sure those are correct. You may also want to fix the connection documents so that they refer directly to the IP address instead of to a server name.

All the DNS settings are entered and correct? We have home.notes.net & home/notes/net entered in the connection document destination fields? I have specified the server and IP address in the corresponding fields and it works ok now. But surely I should not have to enter that in the connection document? This has all started happening since our DNS server changed IP address?

DNS is handled by Windows, not Notes. You’ll need to change the network settings on each machine to reflect the DNS server’s new IP address.
