How do I put a table in a cell so that the table takes up the entire area of the cell rather than putting a margin or blank line at the top and bottom as soon as one of the fields in the table is populated?

Tables are always proceeded and followed by a paragraph. While you cannot delete them, you can hide them. Alternatively, you can set their font-size to 1

I did set it to 1 to minimize it but I am also getting a blank link before and after the table for some reason. Thanks for the suggestion.

The blank line you see there is the (empty) paragraph Graham mentioned.
