I had a horrible experience with the subject product and wondered about others experiences. With the noted platform, release, etc., when fully installed, the program brought Domino to its knees blocking ALL incoming mail. There was an error message that was repeatable. Lost track of it. The bottom line was that I called Symantec on it and they couldn’t figure it out with Level 2 guys and determined it was a bug. Naturally, I needed SPAM protection with the dramatic increase that has occurred in the last 6-8 months. The other hassle is trying to get a refund for buggy software that doesn’t work. Have you had similar problems and have you heard of any fixes or better solutions.
Nearly one year after purchasing the AntiSPAM product, I have not been able to gain a refund for a product they admitted was buggy. Symantec is the most disorganized company I’ve ever seen.
We had a great time on this product for a couple of years. Brilliant, and it stopped most spam dead. (ok - it wasn’t perfect and it did stop the mail server a few times).
Then suddenly we do an upgrade, try to do a few clever things and are beset by problem after problem - add that to the problems I’d been having with our symantec client firewalls and…
… well… our clients are on McAfee now - and we have policy that says that anti-virus and anti-spam screening of email belongs on the gateway - not on the email server.
You can read about my experiences on my blog… You might even find answers to yours.
Check and double check. Read your BLOGs. Unbelievable. I was very much in your shoes to a less complex extent. I am not holding my breath on Microsoft’s security solutions, but I will definitely look at other systems.
I´m also not happy with Premium AntiSpam. The “basic” version has a sign. from 2005 and can find only 5% spam (with some wrong catches) so I disabled it after some testdays…
Then I got a testkey from symantec to activate this premium Antispam. The first try result in a servercrash… The funny thing is I only installed the license… and didn´t tried to activate this product… Ok, after the server comes up I tried to enable it… ops another servercrash… After the server comes up again I called the symantec hotline and asked if I need to install the product on a mx Server or on a Internal Domino Server. The Support said it will work with a internal domino server, no MX server is needed. I asked him about the SMTP-Proxy which must be configured in Premium antispam and he told me that is isn´t needed. So I tried to enable it again on a internal failover mailserver… a new servercrash… I called him again and asked him again if he is shure that it musn´t be configured. After that I was moved to a teamleader or something else and this person said he needs to read the documentation from Premium AntiSpam and will call me back. This is the time when I got a little bit shocked.Doesn´t they know what they are selling?
Sorry, I was off-line for a while. To answer the other fellow’s question, it was the latest version (10.1) with all the downloadable patches. It looks like similar issues…They have not control or expertise with their product, it seems. Frankly, I’d given up on their consumer products some time back as they became more and more buggy filling my various registries with garbage and slowing down the machine considerably. Their Anti-Virus product for Enterprise is starting to get on my nerves as well. It has resource sapping routines that run every time you start up the system that can take 15-20 minutes or more to settle down.
